The police in Abia State have
intercepted a commercial bus conveying 13 Nigerian girls who were allegedly
about to be trafficked to Gabon.
The police also arrested two
suspected human traffickers in the bus.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the bus
with number plate, AYB349AE, was heading for Oron, Akwa Ibom State, from where
the girls would be taken across the border but it was stopped by policemen on
patrol.
Our correspondent learnt that the
girls, whose ages ranged from 15 to 21 years, were rescued at about 7.40pm on
Friday, October 31.
The names of the two suspected
human traffickers, attached to the bus, were not supplied by the police.
However, PUNCH Metro learnt that
the suspects were transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,
Umuahia, immediately after the incident.
The Abia State Police Public
Relations Officer, ASP Ogbonna Godfrey, while confirming the arrests, said the
girls and the suspects had been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service.
He said, “Yes, the incident
happened. The police have handed the rescued girls and the two suspects over to
the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation. The service is the
one handling the matter now.”
