The police in Lagos have arrested
a government worker, identified only as Omoniyi, for allegedly raping his
14-year-old stepdaughter in the Meiran, Alagbado area of Lagos State.
Our correspondent learnt that
Omoniyi was arrested by the Meiran Police Division on Sunday.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the
victim had last week opened up on the matter to a neighbour, who took her to a
non-governmental organisation – Community Surveillance Patrol of Nigeria.
The NGO was said to have reported
the matter at the police station, and Omoniyi was arrested.
One of the officials of the
organisation, identified only as Ebenezer, said, “The 14-year-old girl’s case
was reported to us as a matter of sexual abuse by her stepfather. We then
informed the police.
“Omoniyi is a civil servant in
Osun State. There were text messages that the suspect allegedly sent to the
girl, whenever he came to Lagos on the weekends. The girl claimed the suspect
had been sleeping with her since 2014.”
Our correspondent learnt that the
girl was being rehabilitated by another NGO, the Bimbo Odukoya Foundation, with
the approval of the Lagos State Ministry of Youths and Social Development.
The Lagos State Police Public
Relations Officer, Joe Offor, confirmed the arrest. He added that investigation
was ongoing.
