Suspected Rapist Gets N500, 000 Bail

Ogun - An Ota Magistrates' Court in Ogun on Friday slammed a N500 000 bail on a welder, Rafiu Adeyanju, who allegedly raped his 13-year-old niece.
The Magistrate, Adenariwo Soneye, granted the accused bail with two sureties after he had pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He said one of the sureties should be a civil servant in the state, while the other surety should be a blood relation of the accused.
In addition, Soneye said the sureties should be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adeyanju, 39, who lives at No. 41, Ishashi Road, Akute, Ota, is facing a three-count charge of breach of peace, indecent assault and rape of a minor.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Olumide Ajayi, had told the court that the accused, who is the husband of the complainant’s sister, committed the offences on December 24, 2012.
Ajayi alleged that the accused raped the teenager at his apartment and also threatened to "deal with" her if she informed anybody about it.
The offences, he noted, contravened Sections 249, 360 and 363 of the Criminal Law of Ogun State.
The case was adjourned to November 25 for mention.
