Five men have been accused of raping a 16-year-old
girl in an uncompleted building in the Orile Iganmu area of Lagos State.
The police said the victim was abducted and taken
into the building around 2am by the suspects, who took turns to rape her.
After a police raid, three of the five suspects
were arrested, while the others took to their heels.
They were arraigned on Tuesday before an Ebute Meta
Chief Magistrate’s Court on two counts of rape.
The suspects were identified as Shittu Taiwo (23),
Riliwan Alao (32), and Sunday Akinyele (27). The charge reads, “That you, Shittu Taiwo, Riliwan Alao,
Sunday Akinyele and two others at large on June 4, 2014, at about 2am in an
uncompleted building along Giwa Street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos State in the Lagos
Magisterial District, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit:
rape. That you and others at large did have unlawful sexual intercourse with a
16-year-old girl (name withheld).”
The police prosecutor, DSP Etim Nkankuk, said the
offence was punishable under sections 409 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos
State, Nigeria, 2011.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge and
elected summary trial. Their defence counsel, F.S. Oladele, applied for their
bail in liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.A. Demi-Ajayi, admitted
them to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till July 23, 2014.
