Two men, Godwin John, 22, and Joseph Akpan, 20, during the week appeared before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for raping a 20-year-old lady.
John and Akpan, who live at Ferry area in Oworonshoki, Lagos are standing trial on a two count charge of conspiracy and rape.
The police prosecutor, Godwin Anyanwu, told the court that the accused and three others still at large committed the offences on April 28.
He said that the men, who gathered to revel at the home of the complainant at ferry area, drugged the drink of their victim and took turns to have unlawful carnal knowledge of her.
Anyanwu said that when the lady regained consciousness, she discovered that she had been raped.
“They raped her after they
had drugged her drink and when she regained consciousness the matter was
reported to the police,’’ the prosecutor said.
According to him, the offence is contrary to the provisions of Sections 258 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
However, the accused each pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.
The Magistrate, Mrs. Yewande Aje-Afunwa, granted each of them bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case until June 16 for trial.
