The
Ebonyi Police Command says it has detained an officer, Ndubisi Ewerem, for allegedly
defiling a seven-year-old girl.
The
commissioner of Police, Peace Ibekwe-Abdallah, announced this on Monday in Abakaliki
while briefing journalists.
Mrs.
Abdallah said the officer was detained at the Central Police Station,
Abakaliki, on Sunday for committing the crime.
“The
act is punishable under the law, as the suspect would definitely be punished to
serve as a deterrent to others.
“We
are committed towards sanitising the force as acts contrary to ‘our modus
operandi’ would not be condoned,” she said.
She
noted that the girl’s parents reported the matter to the police and their
statement indicated that she was “fingered”.
“The result of the medical test conducted on the
victim would ascertain whether she was raped or not, as investigation into the
matter is ongoing,” she said.
Sources
told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the suspect lured the victim by telling
her to buy onions for him and defiled her on return from the errand.
The
command announced a week ago that it had “administratively dealt with another officer,
Okporie Okporie, for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl”.
