A fake policeman, Idongesit Effiong, was on Thursday
paraded by the Cross River State Police Command for allegedly raping a
23-year-old woman, identified simply as Etete.
Effiong (29) was arrested by men of the state police
command on January 17, 2016, in the Ekorinim area of Calabar, the state
capital.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. John
Eluu, said the suspect committed the crime along with two of his friends who
were at large.
Punch reports that Eluu said the victim was raped by
Effiong and his two friends on January 17 at an uncompleted building in
Ekorinim.
He said, “On January 17, 2016, One Esther Etete,
came to the command with a case of alleged rape.
“She complained that she was raped by three men at
Ekorinim area of Calabar Municipality.
“Immediately after taking down her statement,
policemen swung into action and were able to arrest Idongesit Effiong while two
of his friends ran away.
“Effiong was arrested with fake police uniform.
“Further investigation shows that he has been using
this fake police uniform to commit heinous crimes in the area.”
According to the PPRO, the police are on the search
for the two fleeing suspects.
